Featuring son Greg Englar on guitar:

Greg is a versatile and accomplished DC area guitarist. He began playing guitar at age 9, and by high school had developed a love for jazz music. In addition to playing with the Eubie Blake High School Jazz Ensemble, he also began to perform in the MD and DC area. During his junior year of high school Greg began studying privately with DC jazz guitar legend, the late Paul Wingo. In 2006 Greg received a scholarship to New York University as a Jazz Performance Major, graduating in 2011.

While in NYC, he performed with the NYU Jazz Repertoire Big Band, The New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band Classic, and his own traditional Dixieland band, the Recessionals – and performed at several well known venues including Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Rockefeller Center, and The Blue Note. While at NYU he also studied with guitarists John Scofield, Randy Johnston, Peter Bernstein, and Bruce Arnold.

During his sophomore year abroad in Florence, Italy (2007-08), Greg performed and toured with the New York-Italia Connection, a jazz combo run by trumpet player Andy Gravish. Locally, Greg has performed with the Capital Focus Jazz Band,
James Bazen Big Band, his father’s group Equinox, and Elikeh Afropop band.

After graduation Greg remained in NYC for another year, and became an active member of the local jazz scene – performing frequently all over New York City as a leader, band member, and sideman. During this time Greg also began teaching in Manhattan and Brooklyn. In 2012 he returned home and began teaching and performing in and around Montgomery County, MD. Since 2022 he has been teaching with Lessons in Your Home, not only on guitar but also piano, bass, drums, and voice.

In 2009 Greg took a semester off and came home. He and I started working on some duets of mostly jazz standards, and had some local gigs – which I recorded and are here for you to listen to and, hopefully, enjoy (featuring Eric Chubin playing electric bass on a few tracks):
